Applying expertise, innovation and technology to improve health
With around 650 people on site, Teva Waterford is one of the largest employers in the southeast of Ireland. Our business is powered by amazing people with high levels of technical capability and expertise.
Supplying essential medicines for respiratory conditions
Teva is the second largest global supplier of medicines on the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Essential Medicines List for respiratory conditions.01
Our product range includes several innovative branded medicines that treat respiratory conditions such as asthma, cystic fibrosis, and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Plus, we have on-going clinical trials for product candidates in our respiratory product pipeline.
We are excited to be shaping the future of respiratory care
We are developing innovative improvements in inhaler technology; including digital advancements and e-connected devices.
Research and Development
Teva's Waterford facility is recognised as a global leader for the manufacture and development of respiratory products. Our research and development focus is dedicated to the next generation respiratory products for the treatment of respiratory conditions that have a significant impact on a patient's quality of life.
Our research covers breath-activated inhaled therapies for asthma and COPD, where incorrect inhaler technique and non-adherence have been shown to be associated with poor asthma control.
We are also researching targeted biologics for uncontrolled asthma.
A key area our global research teams are focusing on is e-connectivity. Using smart inhaler technology patients may be more empowered to manage their condition more effectively, and healthcare professionals could obtain greater insight into the patient's experience and condition to make more informed treatment decisions.
We’re exploring how inhalers connect to a software programme which synchronises and stores data, and presents it through an app-based user interface. This gives both patients and clinicians a clear view of the symptoms and how their treatment could be modified, if necessary.
For healthcare providers, greater insights could improve co-ordination of care delivery, to optimise resource allocation, and reduce costs.
Manufacturing 70 million inhalers for 30+ countries
Teva Waterford is an integral part of Teva Global Operations (TGO). Since 1985 we have been manufacturing pharmaceutical products and now we make a wide range of inhalation devices on site.
Our products are highly complex and we're proud of our technical capabilities which enable us to manufacture combination products through highly automated processes.
Our vision is to become the most innovative, most trusted, and most efficient supplier of respiratory products in the industry, improving the health of respiratory patients.
Take a closer look at what we do
Since our site opened in 1985, we’ve combined expertise in research and development with large-scale manufacturing to create a leading facility supplying products all over the world.
Investing where it drives research forward
The laboratory facilities in Waterford are state-of-the-art with more than $40M invested in capabilities over the last 7 years.
Waterford scientists routinely use cutting-edge materials characterisation techniques, analyse pharmaceutical performance with ground-breaking automation techniques, manufacture material for clinical trial evaluation in pilot facilities and develop combination product devices to deliver essential medication.
Quality standards that raise the bar
We’re proud that the Waterford site’s quality standards are recognised both as the gold standard within Teva, and also by the HPRA (Health Products Regulatory Agency) and US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
We ensure that each and every one of our inhalers meets our high quality standards, at every step in the process. We consistently validate our equipment and manufacture our products according to the most stringent global and local regulations.

Strong links to South East Technological University
Teva plays an active role in the academic community. The site recently partnered with the Waterford's South East Technological University to offer the Philip Kelly Teva Excellence Scholarship. Funded by Teva, it’s worth €9,000 and aims to support an excellent undergraduate student during their studies.
This partnership is highly valued by Dr Helen Fox, Lecturer in Pharmaceutical Science at the Department of Science: “[Teva’s] commitment to the students at [SETU] has had a hugely positive impact, as apart from the funding they receive, students benefit greatly from the mentorship and leadership given by strong Teva role models.”

ESG is at the heart of everything we do
For Teva, Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) means advancing health and equity through our medicines and across our business, minimising the impact of our operations and products on the planet and dedicating ourselves to quality, ethics and transparency.

Sustainability at Teva Waterford
Our labs are certified by My Green Lab®: the worldwide standard for laboratory sustainability best practices.
Our local “Greensteps” sustainability programme encourages employees to submit ideas for improvements:
- Our Waterford team replaced single-use batteries with rechargeable ones across the site, as well as set up a battery recharging station.
- A cross-functional team was also set up to extend the expiry date of lower case assembly parts of inhaler devices, which ultimately avoided the disposal of 460,000 units.
- Green space biodiversity areas were created with a recreational walkway.
- A cycle-to-work scheme is available, along with secure bike storage units.
