Product

Driving digital advances

We are developing innovative improvements in inhaler technology, including digital advancements and the potential for e-connectivity, which will shape the future of respiratory care. 

Teva is the second largest global supplier of medicines on the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Essential Medicines List for respiratory conditions.  

That includes several innovative branded medicines that treat respiratory conditions such as asthma, cystic fibrosis and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and we have on-going clinical trials for product candidates in our respiratory pipeline.  

We are also developing e-connected devices to help improve patient compliance with their prescribed medication.

R&D

Research and Development

The Waterford facility is recognised as a global leader for the manufacture and development of respiratory products. Our research and development focus is dedicated to the next generation respiratory products for the treatment of respiratory conditions. 

Our research covers breath-activated inhaled therapies for asthma and COPD, where incorrect inhaler technique and non-adherence has been shown to be associated with poor asthma control. 

We are also researching targeted biologics for uncontrolled asthma.

E-connectivity

A key area our global research teams are focusing on is E-connectivity. Using smart inhaler technology patients may be more empowered to manage their condition more effectively, and healthcare professionals could obtain greater insight into the patient's experience and condition to make more informed treatment decisions. 

We’re exploring how inhalers connect to a software programme which synchronises and stores data, and presents it through an app-based user interface. This gives both patients and clinicians a clear view of the asthma symptoms and how their treatment could be modified, if necessary.

Data driven insights to improve patient care

This could empower patients and carers to understand, monitor and manage their health, and could enable healthcare professionals to make data-driven decisions from those insights about identifying high risk patients, improving quality of life and better co-ordinating care delivery to optimise resource allocation and reduce costs.

WIT

Strong links to Waterford Institute of Technology

Teva Waterford plays an active role in the academic community. The site recently partnered with the Waterford Institute of Technology to offer the Philip Kelly Teva Excellence Scholarship 

Funded by Teva Ireland, it’s worth €9,000 and aims to support an excellent undergraduate student during their studies. 

This partnership is highly valued by Dr Helen Fox, Lecturer in Pharmaceutical Science at the Department of Science, Waterford Institute of Technology: “[Teva’s] commitment to the students at WIT has had a hugely positive impact, as apart from the funding they receive, students benefit greatly from the mentorship and leadership given by strong Teva Ireland role models.”

Andy

Andy Crowley, General Manager

As the General Manager of Teva Waterford site, he loves the challenge of leading a complex manufacturing and R&D site. 

He is driven by a deep rooted desire to improve the lives of patients: “Sadly, a lot of people still die every year from asthma attacks or due to long term respiratory disease and our medicines are critical in helping patients live longer and healthier lives.”  

As a leader of hundreds of highly qualified professionals, Andy is a strong advocate for continued professional development and fully supports opportunities for academic and vocational education at all levels, for all roles.

Julian Blair, Vice President, Research & Development Operations

Julian recommends Teva as a great place to work: “If you’re eager, ambitious, interested in science, innovative and creative then we can open so many doors for you, whether it’s focusing on a commercial role, project management or developing your scientific skills.”

Ray Finnegan, Finance Director

Ray thought he’d notch up a couple of years’ service at Teva before moving on to the next challenge: “How wrong I was. I’m now in my 29th year and still loving every minute!”

Liam Hartigan, Supply Chain and Logistics

Our Senior Director for Supply Chain and Logistics describes his work as interesting and challenging, that’s what’s kept him working at Teva for over 20 years. 

“Teva is a very progressive company with a relatively young workforce who are interested in opportunity and personal development. We work with a portfolio of high-end respiratory products which present their own challenges, both technical and compliance-related, so there is never a dull day at Waterford!

Cara Crowley, Senior Director Site Quality

Cara’s degree in chemistry set her up for an impressive career at Teva, moving through the Quality team with four promotions in the last 11 years.  

“If you’re a student considering chemistry it’s a great idea because the qualification opens up a whole host of opportunities in R&D, or a commercial lab, or quality assurance.” 

“When you work for Teva, you’re improving the lives of patients across the globe. Every day, around 200 million people around the world take a Teva medicine* and we want to make sure that patients with asthma or Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease have the highest quality product in stock, on time and at an appropriate price.” 

Heidi

Heidi Westphal, Business Analyst, Laboratory Systems

With 15 years of experience in Waterford’s R&D team and then Quality, before moving into IT, Heidi still feels inspired by the work she gets involved in: “My role is challenging but in a good way. We work in a fast-moving, dynamic industry with ever-changing regulations so we need to be flexible and open to change.” 

She values the emphasis that Teva puts on ongoing learning: “Teva allows you to grow and express yourself. I’ve had access to lots of training and one of my biggest achievements was completing my Masters in Industrial Pharmacy, which Teva sponsored me to do. All this has given me the confidence to apply for other roles in different departments. And it doesn’t end here - I’m still learning!”

 And, if all of that wasn’t enough! The city of Waterford has been officially named the 'Best Place To Live in Ireland' by the Irish Times.  

The judges’ decision was unanimous: Waterford was recognised for its historic city centre, thriving culture and beautiful location on the east coast of Ireland.
