Rosilene Burgos

Hi. My name is Rosilene and I'm a Senior Analytical Scientist in the Extractables and Leachables Group at Teva's Waterford site.

Our analytical approach helps deliver results... We look to see if any impurities in our packaging are cross contaminating with our products, which could cause potential harm. We list all the packaging materials we’re using for each product and then, through a controlled study, check what components might be extractable and which could leach into our products.

We’re always looking for new solutions... We’re currently developing an in-house database which will allow us to identify these extractables more easily which will help speed up our work. It’s a very rewarding process and a significant part of what we do.

My career has taken me across the world... I’m originally from Brazil which is where I studied for my Bachelor's and Master’s degrees in Chemistry. After that, I worked at some pharmaceutical companies in Brazil before studying for my PhD in Bioanalytical Science in the Netherlands. After returning to Brazil for my post doctorate, Teva reached out to me about joining the company where I’ve now been for three years.

It was the right role, at the right time... I was looking for new opportunities in Europe and knew the project I was working on at the time would soon come to an end. I’d always wanted to work in pharmaceuticals and had some experience in quality control/ tech transfer before my PhD. So, when Teva approached me, I knew it was something I really wanted to do, and it allowed me to pursue my interests of working more in research and development.

I feel proud to be a woman in science... I’m happy to raise the flag for women in my industry, there are definitely more of us working in science and engineering now which is great to see.

Our work in the laboratory is only half of the story... I would say I’m only in the lab 50% of the time. When I’m not running experiments, I’m spending my time analysing data and writing protocols so there’s lots of variety in my day-to-day.

My biggest achievement since joining Teva... Is seeing our team develop and grow. We now have all of the instruments running and training in place for the team. We’re able to start running projects and internalise things we weren't able to do three years ago.

One of the best things about working at Teva... There are so many opportunities for you to grow and develop your career. Since I started, I’ve constantly been in training sessions, webinars and other workshops to improve my professional skills; it’s something I really enjoy.
