Get the inside look at Teva Runcorn
Our manufacturing facility in Runcorn, Cheshire specialises in difficult-to-make medicines which means the site is teeming with bright and ambitious professionals who are passionate about what they do.
A hub of innovation in the North
At Teva Runcorn we employ around 500 colleagues – both within our large manufacturing facility as well as our research and development site. Our manufacturing teams work in a variety of roles, including quality assurance, manufacturing operations, engineering, microbiology and packaging.
We specialise in manufacturing difficult-to-make medicines that improve the lives of patients all over the world – including treatments for multiple sclerosis, migraine, cancer and various respiratory conditions.
They are broadly split into two categories: pre-filled syringe products and blow-fill-seal products. Read on to learn more about them.
Using a state of the art facility, with cutting edge technology, we manufacture, fill and package some of our products in pre-filled syringes. These are products that allow self-administration in the home (or other non-clinical settings), which can help reduce the burden on healthcare systems.
It means that a patient can take their injectable medicine in the comfort of their own home, rather than having to travel to their GP or hospital to be treated. It also means that the correct dose is administered always, limiting waste and enhancing patient safety.
Blow-Fill-Seal (BFS) technology is a manufacturing technique used to produce small and large volume liquid-filled containers. The basic concept of BFS is that a container is formed, filled, and sealed in a continuous process without human intervention, in a sterile enclosed area inside a machine.
There are very few human interventions in the entire manufacuring process, this reduces the risk of microbial contamination and foreign particulates.
Runcorn is also home to two research and development centres, focused on developing sterile drug products and sterile device technology.
Researchers in the device technology team have developed all sorts of delivery devices, from reusable auto-injectors and syringes pre-filled with a dosage of medicine that you take out of a pack, to pen devices with drug filled cartridges ready to inject and freeze-dried powders that can be dissolved in vial kits.
Our Sterile Training Academy is also located at the site – containing a sterile, temperature-controlled product team room to help train the next generation of pharmaceutical professionals.
Take a closer look at what we do
Since our site opened in 1980, we’ve been on a huge journey with the aim of differentiating ourselves from other companies like ours, and finding our niche - not only in terms of the medicinal products we produce, but also how our business works. We pride ourselves on employing talented and highly skilled graduates who are passionate about making a difference.
We’re proud of the medicines we make at Runcorn, both for patients up and down the UK but also further afield – we’re a major supplier for the US market, for example.
For all of us, patient safety sits at the heart of everything we do. Join us on a guided tour behind the scenes to see some of the quality and safety checks that go in to producing medicines at our site.
