Central Nervous System

There can be many challenges - physical, financial and emotional - faced every day by people and their families, living with diseases of the central nervous system.
Neurodegenerative conditions and movement disorders such as multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s Disease, Huntington’s Disease and Tardive Dyskinesia affect every aspect of life, with even the most mundane tasks requiring great courage and effort.
We are committed to understanding and studying neurodegenerative disorders so that we can find molecules that allow us to change the course of disease. We are also focused on innovation to help patients safely and effectively manage pain, which can severely affect their quality of life.
We know that disorders of the central nervous system place a significatant financial impact on the Irish Health Service. We believe more needs to be done to improve the lives of people affected by these conditions and work towards their prevention and eradication.
There are several innovative branded medicines that treat disorders of the central nervous system, including conditions such as multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s Disease, Huntington’s Disease and Tardive Dyskinesia.
Multiple Sclerosis
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a condition affecting the central nervous system, which consists of the brain and the spinal cord. The central nervous system acts like a switchboard sending electrical messages along the nerves to various parts of the body. These electrical messages instruct the body to perform various tasks, such as movement or thought.
Most healthy fibres are insulated by myelin, a fatty substance which aids the flow of messages. In MS, the myelin breaks down or becomes scarred. This distorts or even blocks the flow of messages, resulting in the many symptoms of MS.
You could liken it to a faulty electrical flex on an appliance: If the insulating flex breaks, it exposes the wires underneath making them more vulnerable to damage.
When you’re diagnosed with MS life as you knew it may be limited, but with the right attitude, medical guidance and support, MS can be managed. Teva provides additional patient support programmes for patients prescribed Teva medications for MS.
Applying expertise, innovation and technology to improve health
Making progress on neurodegenerative disease is urgently needed. Through our global research organisation we are developing a focused pipeline of new drugs and novel treatments to meet patient and societal needs in neurological disorders.
Our research teams have delivered ongoing success in disorders of the central nervous system, and globally we have a number of clinical trials investigating potential indications for our molecules in pain and disorders of the central nervous system.
We are dedicated to supporting our patients and healthcare professionals
Our work with patients, and our experience in this therapy area, means we are well placed to invest in extensive research into potential cures and medicines to help alleviate the many symptoms of central nervous system disorders, to offer patients and healthcare professionals a wider choice of treatments.
